A Design for the Generations
- Generations Together is the first facility in Michigan built
specifically to link those who are growing up with those who are
growing old.
- Generations Together meets and complies with all State of Michigan
policies and is recognized as a licensed child care center.
- Our 12,000-square foot building, entirely barrier-free, is set
in a wooded, natural setting next to Creekside Intermediate School
(formerly Dexter High School) on Baker Road. The physical and
social environment encourages contact between the generations
without forcing it. Each age group has its own areas, its own
activities, its own program director, and its own specially trained
staff.
- Three fenced outdoor play areas are designated for children,
while a sun porch and deck overlooking a mill pond and mature
pine trees are quiet spaces reserved for our seniors.
- Shared areas include a large dining room, library and computer
room, year-round indoor greenhouse, and outdoor garden. The dining
room, with foldaway tables for snacks and lunches, is the site
of many shared activities, from craft projects to singing and
storytelling.
Our Concept of Care
Our concept of care is based on meeting everyone's needs as an
individual. A toddler needs a safe, fun way to explore this big,
wide world. A four-year-old needs to learn about friendship and
accomplishment. An older adult needs to maintain independence
and dignity. This is where we begin.
There we add the tremendous benefits of intergenerational care.
Young children and older adults have something in common that
is all too rare for the rest of us: time. Time to share, to laugh,
to play games. Time to plant sees and watch a garden grow. Time
to watch the birds at the feeder and learn their names. Time to
sing "I've been workin' on the railroad"-again. At Generations
Together, this time can be shared.
Reuniting youngsters with their elders brings a joy of companionship
that promotes good health, good feelings about life, a love of
today, and an interest in tomorrow.
We invite you to come and visit Generations Together. It is more
than just a center for seniors and children. It is a return to
a way of life where those who are grandchildren share their days
and their dreams.
